UAE Golden Visa for engineers
An engineering title does not qualify you. ICP’s industry-specialist route needs a recommendation from the relevant ministry or local authority. The skilled-professional route needs MOHRE occupational level 1 or 2, a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, a valid UAE work permit and contract, and a monthly salary of at least AED 30,000. Membership of a professional society is not published as a substitute for either route.
Which published route can apply
Civil, mechanical, electrical and software engineers often get the same advertisement. The category does not care about the discipline until a nominating body does. Start with the published test.
| Route | What ICP publishes | What this page will not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Industry or 4IR specialist | Recommendation from the relevant ministry or local authority | That “engineer” is itself the recommendation |
| Skilled professional | Level 1 or 2, degree, UAE permit and contract, salary at least AED 30,000 | A site allowance or a home-country salary paid off the contract |
| Company owner who is also an engineer | Investor or entrepreneur tests: capital, tax, revenue or an approved idea | A trade licence plus an engineering degree |
The only monthly salary figure on this page is the AED 30,000 ICP publishes for skilled professionals in MOHRE occupational levels 1 and 2, together with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent and a valid UAE work permit and contract. This page does not invent a salary for a job title.
If you run a contracting company, you may be on a business route rather than a profession route. That file lives on the business owners page. A freelance permit is not one of the ICP sentences above. Do not stretch this page to cover it.
Eligibility signals for an engineering file
The degree is necessary for the salary route and still not sufficient.
Eligibility signals to gather before anyone files
- Degree title and whether it is a bachelor’s or equivalent, if you are using the skilled route.
- MOHRE level. “Senior engineer” on a business card is not the level. The level is the classification on the permit.
- Salary on the contract, compared with AED 30,000, with no private arithmetic about allowances.
- A nomination letter if the industry-specialist route is the one you were promised. Ask who signs it.
- Whether your name is on company capital instead. Mixing the two stories in one form is how files get refused.
- Attestation lead time if the degree was issued outside the UAE. Build that into the plan. It is PRO work, not a visa trick.
THAJ does not keep a private list of engineering salaries by discipline. ICP published one figure for the skilled route. Disciplines do not get their own.
Document themes
Themes only. A nominating ministry can ask for a portfolio or a classification card that is not on this list.
- Passport, photo, current visa and Emirates ID if you have them.
- Engineering degree, attested when the route requires it.
- Equivalency or classification documents if the nominating body has asked for them. They are not a category by themselves.
- Employment contract and work permit with level and salary, for the skilled route.
- Recommendation from the ministry or local authority, for the specialist route.
- Health insurance where ICP requires it for the category.
Where a UAE authority asks for attestation or legal translation, that paperwork is coordinated as PRO work. The nominating body can ask for more than this list.
How an application usually moves
Match a published category
Write down which ICP route you are using: a specialist nomination, the Emirates Scientists Council, or the skilled-professional test. Do not file under a job title alone.
Collect the evidence that route names
Passport, photo, the degree or recommendation the route actually requires, and health insurance where ICP lists it for that category.
Nomination or direct file
Specialist and scientist routes go through the competent council, ministry or local authority. The skilled-professional route needs the UAE work permit and contract in place.
Authority decision, then residence steps
Approval is the authority’s. After it, applicants abroad use the entry window ICP describes; residents change status. Then medical, biometrics and Emirates ID.
Medical fitness, biometrics and Emirates ID follow the same order as every other category. Read the application process and the rejections guide before you book travel around an approval you do not have yet.
Family, the job, and time outside the UAE
A Golden Visa holder can sponsor a spouse, children of any age and parents, and ICP also refers to domestic workers. Health insurance for family members is an investor-category condition and is wise to have ready for other categories too. The permit is not an employment visa tied to one sponsor: ending a job is not described on the ICP page we cite as an automatic cancellation, but renewal still means the category conditions are checked again. Time outside the UAE is covered on keeping the visa while abroad. You can be sponsored as family by a spouse who holds a Golden Visa without meeting the engineer test yourself. If you are the main applicant, keep the nomination or the employment evidence you used, because renewal looks at the category again. Losing the job is discussed as a cancellation myth on the outside the UAE page: do not treat a Golden Visa as an employment visa, and do not treat it as impossible to lose.
Frequently asked questions
Do engineers get a Golden Visa automatically after a degree?
No. You need a recommendation for the industry-specialist route, or the full skilled-professional test, including AED 30,000 a month if that is the route.
Does Society of Engineers membership qualify me?
It is not a category on the ICP page this site cites. It may be something a nominating body asks to see. It does not replace the recommendation or the salary test.
I own an engineering consultancy. Which page is mine?
If the company is the basis, use the business-owners guide. Capital, tax paid or revenue are the tests, not the fact you are an engineer.
Can a fresh graduate apply?
Only if a published category is met. A degree without the salary test, the nomination, or another route such as the student criteria is not enough. Student rules are separate and strict.

Send the permit level or the nomination
One of those two, or we look at a different category. We will not dress a degree up as a visa.
