Golden Visa family sponsorshipICP and DLD rules

UAE Golden Visa for your family

A UAE Golden Visa holder can sponsor a spouse, children regardless of their age, and parents, and can also sponsor domestic workers. In Dubai, DLD charges AED 5,774.50 per family member or parent for a 10-year permit, plus AED 100 per sponsored person and a one-time AED 318.75 family file fee. If the holder dies, the family can stay until their own permits expire.

03

When family files can start

Family residence follows the sponsor’s Golden Visa. It is not filed as a bundle on the day you first ask whether you qualify.

  1. Sponsor first

Your Golden Visa, or at least the approval path the authority is actually using, has to be real. A property that does not yet meet AED 2 million cannot sponsor anyone.

  2. Civil documents

Marriage and birth certificates issued outside the UAE are certified, and often attested and translated, before DLD will treat them as the documents on its list.

  3. Insurance and photos

Health insurance is on DLD’s family list, and ICP requires comprehensive cover for family members in the investor category. A travel policy is not that cover.

  4. Each person is a file

A spouse, a child and a parent do not share one form. Fees are per person, plus the family file once, as the table above shows.

The order of medical, biometrics and Emirates ID for the sponsor is on the process page. Family applications are the last of those stages, not the first.

04

Children of any age, and who signs

ICP allows residence permits for children regardless of age. That is different from an ordinary employment-visa household, where sons are often limited by age. DLD still asks for an undertaking that sons or daughters over 18 are unmarried, and for certified birth certificates.

If the mother is the Golden Visa holder and she sponsors the children, DLD asks for a notarised no-objection letter from the father. The letter is a document, not a suggestion. If the parents are divorced or the father cannot be found, say so before the file is built. Do not send a self-written note in place of the notarised letter.

Student Golden Visa holders are narrower. GDRFA Dubai says high-school achievers may sponsor parents only, not siblings, and university graduates may sponsor a spouse and children only with an employment contract, steady income and housing. Those limits are on the student page. Do not promise a teenager that a parent’s student permit works like an investor permit.

05

Parents and domestic workers

  • Parents need a consulate-certified dependency certificate, a certified birth certificate linking them to you, health insurance, a photo, your identity documents and an IBAN, on DLD’s list.
  • DLD’s parent fee on the 10-year permit is AED 5,774.50, the same figure as a spouse or child, plus the per-sponsored-person charge.
  • Parents are sponsored. They are not joint investors unless their own share of a property meets the investor test. See joint ownership.
  • ICP says a Golden Visa holder can also sponsor domestic workers under the applicable regulations. A maid’s visa is not a family Golden Visa and it is not free of those regulations. Ask which permit applies before you hire.
06

Work, school and a family permit

A family residence is permission to live as a sponsored relative. It is not, on the pages this site cites, a work permit or a school place. A spouse who will take a job needs the labour and residence steps that job requires. A school decides its own admissions. Anyone who sells the Golden Visa as “school fees included” or “the spouse can work anywhere” is not quoting ICP or DLD.

If the sponsor later sells the property or leaves a job that was the basis of their own visa, the family’s cards do not answer that question. Read selling the property and time outside the UAE against the sponsor’s category, not against the dependant’s photo.

07

If the sponsor dies

ICP states that if the Golden Residency holder dies, sponsored family members may remain in the UAE for the validity of their residence permits. That keeps the household legal until those permits end. It does not issue a new Golden Visa, and it does not transfer the dead sponsor’s property category to a spouse.

When the family’s own permits near expiry, each person needs a basis of their own or a new sponsor. A spouse who never met the AED 2 million test does not inherit the investor category by bereavement. Plan the next route while the permits are still valid: another property share, a company route, or a skilled-professional file if the person actually meets it. The eligibility page is the list. THAJ will not invent a compassionate category that the authority has not published.
